Gladstone

Gladstone is situated to the south of Rockhampton and has a population of approximately 26000. Developed on hills overlooking the focal point of its economic development - the natural deepwater harbour, this modern city basks in a sub-tropical climate with islands, waterways and beaches providing year round boating, fishing, swimming and surfing. As the centre of the southern reef, access to Heron Island, Lady Musgrave Island and uninhabited coral cays, offers visitors the miracle of the Great Barrier Reef. A large Charter Boat fleet operates from the world class Marina.

A wide variety of restaurants and eateries cater to all tastes and fresh seafood and mud crab feature on the Menu.

Climate

Gladstone has a temperature range of 13 to 31 degrees Celsius and an annual rainfall of 910 millimetres.

Situation

Gladstone is situated 120 kms south of Rockhampton and 767 kms north of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. The city is serviced by Qantas and Virgin Airlines and Queensland Rail provide an excellent daily service to Brisbane on the Tilt Train.

Industry

The industrial growth of the Gladstone area represents one of Australia's development success stories. Gladstone has the worlds largest aluminium plant, the State's largest power station, busiest port and will soon have Australia's largest aluminium smelter. Until the mid 1960's Gladstone was a small community of 6000 people with a meatworks and relative small port trade as its main economic base. The key to the industrial growth was the natural harbour, together with many of the services and raw materials needed by industry - sustainable land, transport, water, electricity, coal and limestone.

The establishment of Queensland Alumina Bauxite Refinery was the catalyst for modern industrial growth which has seen the district population grow in the last 25 years. The alumina plant employs 1300 people and produces about a tenth of the world's alumina. Following construction of the Gladstone Power Station, the Boyne Smelter began aluminium production. Gladstone growth continues with the construction of another smelter imminent for the city. Building is booming in Gladstone to cope with the influx of workers for the new industries.
