Do I need Private Health Insurance to be admitted at the Mater?

No

While many patients at the Mater have health insurance, you do not have to be insured to be admitted. Patients without private health insurance often come to the Mater and choose to pay for their hospital stay out of their own pocket. Just ask your doctor to be admitted to the Mater. Our office staff can provide information regarding costs prior to admission, so don't hesitate to ask.

For those Patients who do have health insurance, it is wise to always be aware of what your private health insurance covers, whether there are excesses on your cover or special conditions.

For any queries on costs associated with hospital stays at the Mater, just phone our admission team to discuss.

What happens if I get sick after hours?

The Mater After Hours Medical Service is situated at the Mater Hospital but run independently. If you need to see a doctor after hours, you can come straight to the Service without an appointment to see the GP on call. If you then require admission to hospital, this can be arranged for you easily and your usual GP will be notified as soon as possible.

You will receive accounts from a variety of sources after you have been in Hospital. The Hospital will send you an account for any monies outstanding and you will also receive an account from your Doctor/Surgeon. How do I know what to bring in?

The Hospital provides information brochures on what to bring into hospital.

If you are having an operation and staying overnight, we invite you to take advantage of our Pre Operative Clinic Service where the nursing staff will provide you with information about what to bring in. For those patients only staying for the day, you should have received an Information Package about our Hospital from your Surgeon. This explains everything you need to know about what to bring into Hospital.

For all other types of patients we suggest, as a minimum guide the following:

For your own security, please do not bring in any valuables. For more information on your up and coming hospital admission, please click here for our Day Surgery Patient information document.
